The EBV105-UMK is meant to work with standard ball valves in 1/2", 3/4" and 1" sizes. It has plenty of torque but it's crucial that the valve is free moving and that the motor and mounts are lined up properly. If you move the water valve by hand and it's very hard to move we suggest having the valve replaced. You want to be able to move it freely whether you automate it or not!
