If I replace my smoke detector do I need to replace the bracket and wires?
In most cases, the mounting bracket and wires used to connect a smoke detector to the ceiling and power, are proprietary to the brand or model so you'll need to replace the mounting bracket and the wire harness (plug). The good news is that both are included in the package with all new smoke detectors. The bracket normally only attaches with two small bolts so it's easy to replace.
The wiring harness (plug) attaches to the house electrical wiring by two or three wires and screw-on connectors. This part should be performed by an electrician or a homeowner familiar with electrical wiring. It's not difficult but it's important to turn off power first and to match the correct wiring following the installation instructions included with the new smoke detector.
Typically black goes to black, white goes to white and the third wire which is often red or orange, goes to the red wire in the ceiling. Again this is only typical guidance and you'll need to make sure you understand what you're doing or call for help.
