Scan for WiFi Networks, Signal Strength, Channels on iPhone / iOS

Wi-Fi lets us connect our devices without wires.  When it works well it's amazing.  But every house and business has one or more WiFi access points with many devices so there can be too many signals competing to create reliable WiFi.  Combine that with low quality equipment and it can be a disaster.  Most WiFi device problems can be attributed to poor or intermittent WiFi.

How to Scan for WiFi Networks, Signal Strength and Channels on iPhone:

  1. Download the Apple Airport Utility
  2. Go to your iPhone settings and find the Airport Utility
  3. Click through and turn on "WiFi Scanner".
  4. Open the Airport Utility
  5. Click Wi-Fi Scan at the top right
  6. Watch data roll in about various networks
  7. Press STOP when done to analyze the results
  8. Click to see history on any of the networs

From those results you'll see if multiple networks are competing on the same channel - if so you may want to move your WiFi to another channel.
You'll also see how strong your signal, with a dBm rating.

Wi-Fi Signal Strength dBm Translated

-30 dBm: You are standing beside the WiFi access point or router
-50 dBm: Excellent
-60 dBm: Good
-67 dBm: OK but mostly reliable.
-70 dBm: Poor
-80 dBm or higher - forget it
