Smoke Detector Replacement Date Showing Too Early

Smoke Detector Replacement Date Showing Too Early

From BRK Canada, the manufacturer for First Alert, BRK and American Sensors:

The reason we suggest alarms be replaced every 10 years (CO 5 yrs) are environmental.  Studies show they operate less effectively after 10 years from being exposed to dust, bugs, pollen, pet dander, etc.  However, as long as an alarm is in the packaging it is not exposed to any of the above.  Therefore, if one is installing an alarm that has been in the box for 1, 2 or 5 years, one can simply write over the 'year to replace' on the alarm and modify it to 10 years after date of installation.
