Most automated light dimmer switches, and all on/off switches require connection for hot and neutral to provide power to the switch's circuitry (the switch's brains). The are a couple of dimmers available like the Insteon 2474DWH 2 wire incandescent dimmer, or the Jasco 2 wire Zwave dimmer. These are ONLY compatible with incandescent light bulbs as they pass a tiny bit of current through the light bulb's filament even when turned off. This doesn't work well, or at all, with LED or other types of lighting and as incandescent bulbs become less available, this solution becomes less practical.

At the time of writing this article, the only options are:

1) Run a neutral wire to the switch location.
2) Use incandescent lighting with a 2 wire dimmer where available
3) Use a switch/dimmer at the switch locatoin and an inline module at the light fixture like this:

4) Use something like the Fibaro Dimmer 2 module that installs in a standard switch box, with a 'bypass module' at the light fixture
