How to Replace An Alarm System Battery

If your alarm system has a dead battery or low battery, you will have a trouble condition on the alarm keypad, and you may hear beeping from the keypad to remind you that you need to check in to the cause of the trouble condition.

On most alarm systems you can temporarily silence the trouble condition - see your alarm system's specific instructions.

If the trouble condition is a result of a low battery, we have written an article on how to replace your alarm system battery.  If you are comfortable opening up the metal alarm enclosure, and are good at following directions this is likely a do it yourself project that wouldn't take more than about 5 minutes in total.

You can read more about it here:

Alarm batteries don't last forever.  They can fail due to age, including having been stored on a shelf too long somewhere.  The purpose of the alarm system battery is to provide back-up power for your alarm system should the AC mains power fail.  Each time this happens the battery may weaken and in particular if the failure is prolonged, and the battery gets deeply discharged, the battery may no longer hold a full charge.

It's probably a good idea to change out your battery every 2-3 years regardless.  Even if it isn't signaling a low condition, it may not provide nearly the length of back-up needed if it's not in good shape.
