Integrating Insteon with An Alarm System using an Insteon IOLinc 2450

The Insteon IOLinc can provide basic integration to an alarm system from DSC, GE, Visonic, etc.

Most alarm panels feature programmable outputs (PGM outputs) that can be set to trigger based on either a zone/sensor change, arm state, or alarm state.  By connecting these outputs to a relay like ELK-924, and the output of the relay to an IOLinc, an Insteon controller can 'see' this PGM change.

The output of the IOLinc can be linked to an alarm zone to provide alarm activation.  Most alarms with wired inputs have a 'zone type' called 'key switch' or something similar.  This means that when the zone is activated, the alarm will arm and conversely when it's deactivated it will disarm.  By connecting the IOLinc output, to the 'key switch' zone, the alarm can be armed or disarmed by an Insteon controller.

Note that programming PGM outputs and Zone definitions requires the Installer programming code and if your alarm is monitored you will need to discuss this with your alarm or monitoring company prior to working on the alarm system.
