Using Relays to Control High Voltage Lighting

Using Relays to Control High Voltage Lighting

Q:

I'm looking into relays to control my house lighting (via a controller) and was wondering if the ELK-912 have the proper certification to pass inspection in Canada?

A:

Relays are typically treated as a component and have no certification for high voltage. You'd also be mixing high and low voltage which would require careful consideration of codes. For sure you'd have to get a site safety done on it specifically.

What we recommend instead would be to use high voltage dimmers & switches such as Insteon or Zwave or UPB, or a wired automation product like Leviton's OmniBus, all of which can be controlled by central controller(s) and have appropriate electrical certifications for high voltage use.

Ultimately when in doubt, contact your local electrical inspector and city/town for guidance and make sure you're using a licensed electrician who will look after the appropriate permits and inspections.
