Wireless PIR Motion Detector Testing and Operation

Wireless PIR Motion Detector Testing and Operation

Wireless motion sensors from DSC, Elk, Honeywell, Resolution, etc are designed to trip once when they see motion and then go to 'sleep' for quite a while before waking up to detect motion again. This is to conserve battery. They also don't flash the LED once installed... So this sometimes causes trouble when trying to bench test their function and people think they may not be functioning properly.

The best way to bench test would be:

1) put the motion sensor in a drawer or somewhere that it's impossible to detect any motion.
2) leave it for 10 minutes .. give it time to reset
3) arm the alarm system to AWAY mode
4) make sure you open and then close an exit door (** important - or the system will fall back to stay mode which disables all motions)
5) go open the drawer and give the sensor motion
